I dashed off these thoughts the other day on my iPhone thinking about how things which are at rest are in time. Obviously, Aristotle gives different answer, but I think basing measuring rest by change of relations works. Have thoughts? Feel free to offer them in the comments. Thanks!

When the mobile object which is perceived is at rest, time still passes. Aside from chemical and atomic activity within the mobile which is at rest, there is another category of changes which the mobile undergoes, albeit indirectly. Since the mobile object has relation to every other object in the world, when the other objects move, these relations change.

Take spatial relations, those of “to the right of” or “to the left of,” “five feet away from,” “six feet away from.” The relation of the resting object to a moving object changes as the moving object changes it’s relation. Similarly, a body of water which maintains its temperature, which is at rest, will have a changing relation to another body of water which is being heated. At first it is hotter than the other body of water. At a later point of the motion, it will be the same temperature as the other body of water. At a still later point, it will be colder than the other body of water. Thus, thus unchanging body of water, although not changing in itself, is still in time insofar as is has a real relation to other bodies which are changing.

We cannot perceive the passing of time by merely observing the resting body (precinding from the flow if thoughts by which we note times passage while in a dark room). However, not perceiving the motions of other bodies does not mean the body we do observe is not in time.

This is to be contrasted with God. Although we do have a real relation to God, he does not have a real relation to us. He is not in time because he does not have a set of constantly shifting relations to his ever moving creation.

This is what is what it means to be in time. An object will either be moving or will have a shifting set of relations to the other bodies which are being moved.

A further note must be observed with regard to this constantly shifting matrix of relations. The resting body does not actually change, it does not actually under go motion in respect to it’s subjective constitution. It is not being actualized. The only change in it’s esse is it’s esse ad  alium mobilium. How this relates to the definition of motion is something to be explored elsewhere.
